Overview
The arachnoid helps cushion the brain and the nerves of the spinal cord. In adhesive arachnoiditis, the arachnoid becomes inflamed, causing the spinal nerves to stick together. It is the most severe and progressive form of arachnoiditis and can lead to chronic pain in the back, legs, arms and feet. This painful neurological condition is relatively rare, but we offer revolutionary and innovative treatment options to help improve each patient’s quality of life.
Symptoms:
The symptoms of arachnoiditis can vary depending on the patient and change over time as the condition progresses. In its early stages, patients with arachnoiditis may believe they have a minor muscle or joint injury. As the source of arachnoiditis pain is neurological, massage and similar approaches may have little effect on relieving pain. The most common symptoms include:
- Muscle and joint pain
- Nerve pain
- Unusual sensations in the extremities
- Muscle weakness
Causes:
It is rare for arachnoiditis to be acquired genetically. There is usually a direct cause, which may include:
- Injury during spinal surgery
- Myelography, or when a dye is injected into the spinal column
- Exposure to certain chemicals
- Injections into the spine
- Lumbar puncture
- Infections of the spine
- Trauma to the spine
- Cancer in or around the spine
Treatment:
There are numerous treatment options for adhesive arachnoiditis. These include:
- Epidural steroid injection
- Medial branch block
- Pulsed radiofrequency neuromodulation
- Trigger point injections
- Spinal cord stimulator
- Intrathecal pump
